The following teaching of the Besht continues a theme we have seen before –that our religious experience is the פנימיות of our regular experiences. The implication is that a truly and fully lived religious life does not avoid experience; it is not even distinct from our experiences. Rather, a religious life is life lived deeper.
Heschel refers to this aspect of the Besht’s teachings when he writes
All worship and ritual are essentially attempts to remove our callousness to the mystery of our own existence and pursuits.
In this week’s selection, the Degel Machane Efraim opens with four contradictory statements in order to frame a fundamental teaching of his grandfather, the Besht.
The commandment to know G-d (in our parsha: וידעתם כי אני ה' אלוקיכם) precedes all other commandments
At the same time, we know nothing of G-d, nothing at all.
To “know” something (or someone) means to create a connection.
True “knowledge of G-d” would be to know G-d in everything, that הכל ממנו – everything is from (of?) him
So the Degel Machane Ephraim presents us with the paradox that the most important commandment of Judaism is to do something that is absolutely impossible –to know G-d.
The paradox forces us to rethink our assumptions and redefine our terms. “To know” in a meaningful way refers not to abstract knowledge of an external object but to connection, encounter and relationship. And so, the goal of religious life moves from abstract knowledge, from the philosophical to the experiential.
The Degel Machan Efraim takes this basic premise and develops three (extraordinary, in my opinion) teachings.
Religious encounter lies not in a direct unmediated experience of G-d, but in discovering G-d within the existing range of experiences. We encounter G-d in the depth of our lives.
We encounter G-d (in this sense of encounter/knowledge) not only in experiencing the good things, blessing, and Love of G-d, but also in hard times, loneliness, distance and even suffering.
One can even encounter G-d even in the experience of distance from G-d (a claim that Rav Kook applied to his contemporaries: Zionist pioneers who abandoned religion for what Rav Kook understood to be religious reasons)
Here is the source. I hope you are able to make sense of it, and that some of you will post responses and thoughts…
Note: In order to understand the source one needs only a very basic familiarity with the terminology of the first three sefirot; chessed (love, unrestricted giving) gevura (harshness, withdrawal within limits, decrees), and tiferet (beauty, balance between chessed and gevura). One experiences hessed when one experiences the overflow of blessing in the world, gevura when one experiences the withdrawal of blessing and the intrusion of limits, loss and retreat.
