Question of the Week, September 22, 2013:

Hi Rav Sperling,

Lately I've had to stay at home from shul during Elul and the chagim period and I can't seem to find any information on whether I can/should include the following in my prayers: does one say Avinu Malkeinu when davening alone? Hoshanot? Slichot?

Answer:

Shalom,

Thank you for your question. I'm sorry I didn't get your email before chag. Here is an answer just l'shmah"

  • Avinu Malkeinu – yes, you say it without a minyan
  • Hoshanot – yes, you can say it alone
  • Slichot – yes, you may say them without a minyan, but you need to leave out the 13 Midot of Hashem (or say them with the "trop" as you would when reading them from a chumash – but it's probably easier just to leave them out).

Blessings for a Shana Tova,

-Rav Sperling
