1. Introduction
The Messilat Yesharim begins,
החיבור הזה לא חברתיו ללמד לבני האדם את אשר לא ידעו, אלא להזכירם את הידוע להם כבר ומפורסם אצלם פירסום גדול. כי לא תמצא ברוב דברי, אלא דברים שרוב בני האדם יודעים אותם ולא מסתפקים בהם כלל, אלא שכפי רוב פרסומם וכנגד מה שאמתתם גלויה לכל, כך ההעלם מהם מצוי מאד והשכחה רבה.
Very loosely translated,
I have not written this book to teach you things that you do not already know, rather to remind you of things that you do know, and that are clear to you. But precisely because these things seem so clear, we forget them and ignore them, and seldom give them our attention.
What in your life falls into that category? What values and priorities are clear to you? Is the Ramchal right, that we lose track specifically of those values which are so clear to us? Are there priorities in your life that get lost in the melee; forgotten not because they are not realistic or true to you, nor because you don’t genuinely care, but because it is so remarkably easy to get distracted by all the anxieties, stresses, and urgent demands on your time?
And what are the values about which you don’t have that clarity, about which you sometimes feel conviction and sometimes feel real doubt and insecurity?
