Question of the Week, December 1, 2013:

Hi Rav Sperling,

I accidentally heated up dairy pancakes in a meat bowl. Is there a way to make the bowl be meat again? Thanks!
Rachel

Answer:

Shalom Rachel,

If the pancakes are really dairy – that is they have butter and milk in them – we have a problem. But if they were parve pancakes cooked on a dairy pan – then the meat bowl is fine.

If there is a problem, it depends on what the bowl is made of. If it is glass, it can just be washed off. If it's metal – then boiled up in boiling water. If it's plastic or ceramic you will have a problem koshering it. (It's worthwhile giving a Rabbi a phone call in these situations just to check all the fine details – especially before throwing a bowl away.)

Blessings,
-Rav Sperling
